The Aurora Borealis are named after the Roman Goddess of dawn, Aurora and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas. They occur when the solar wind particles are accelerated along the Earth's magnetic field, colliding with atoms in the upper atmosphere and resulting in the release of a photon of light. The colours emitted vary from atom to atom according to their position within the atmosphere, but shades of green tend to be the most common. The scientific explanation of the phenomena however does not detract from the magic and enchantment of seeing this breathtaking spectacle with your own eyes. Curtains of greens, blues, pinks and yellows drape against the cold dark sky, filling the darkness with their awe-inspiring beauty. Although sightings are not guaranteed, given the right conditions on a clear, cloudless night you may be lucky enough to witness this peculiar and enchanting display. So for a holiday of a lifetime, wrap up warm and treat yourself to a trip to see the Northern Lights with us.
